Hackers Heat French Supermarket Fridges, Sparking Fires and Spoiling Food
Hackers remotely infiltrated connected refrigeration systems in numerous French supermarkets, causing severe damage. Some refrigerators and freezers were reportedly heated to dangerously high temperatures, spoiling food and igniting fires. This widespread cyberattack prompted French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu to launch a cybersecurity investigation. Similar incidents have also been reported across several other European countries, including Spain, Portugal, Poland, Germany, and Belgium. Major French retailers like Carrefour, Monoprix, and Les Mousquetaires confirmed significant numbers of affected stores. These supermarket cold aisles are managed by internet-accessible control panels, a feature exploited by attackers. A vulnerability in software supplied by Danish company Danfoss has been identified as a potential cause. Danfoss acknowledged the incidents, stating the affected units were running outdated firmware. The company emphasized its prior recommendations for customers to maintain updated systems and migrate legacy ones. Cybersecurity research had previously detailed vulnerabilities in Danfoss controllers that, if unpatched, could allow attackers system access.
