Has the James Web Space Telescope Discovered a New 'Black Hole Star'?

The James Webb Space Telescope has detected numerous small red dots in its images. Two teams of astronomers propose these are a new astronomical object called a black hole star, shining with immense brightness and hiding a black hole at its core. However, this interpretation is met with some disagreement within the scientific community. The red dots exhibit unusual hydrogen spectral lines, typically indicating the presence of an exposed black hole. These newly observed dots were too bright to be ordinary stars and didn't fit the typical appearance of black holes. The proposed black hole star theory suggests a black hole acts as an engine, pulling gas and preventing the star's outer layers from collapsing. This discovery is seen as potentially representing the birth of massive black holes. After a year of debate, simulations offer an alternative explanation for the little red dots. These simulations suggest the dots are black holes growing exceptionally fast due to early universe conditions. Intense radiation in the early universe suppressed small star formation, allowing gas to form a single supermassive star that then collapsed into a black hole seed. These simulated seeds, surrounded by dense gas disks, can grow at rates far exceeding those possible today, matching the observed properties of the little red dots.
