Hate crimes against Latinos and Sikhs hit record high in 2025

Preliminary 2025 FBI data reviewed by Axios reveals a concerning trend of increasing anti-Latino and anti-Sikh hate crimes, defying a general decline in overall hate crimes. Anti-Latino bias reached the top three most targeted categories for the first time in 34 years. Anti-Latino hate crimes surged to a record 1,014 incidents, while anti-Sikh hate crimes saw a significant increase. Despite a 29% drop, anti-Jewish hate crimes showed a notable decrease after prior increases. Anti-trans hate crimes, although down slightly, remained significantly above their historical average alongside anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. Although overall hate-crime incidents fell by 11%, the year was still the 5th highest in the history of FBI data. Both anti-trans and anti-Latino cases experienced substantial increases since 2015. The data is preliminary and may be altered in the FBI's final annual release. Hate crime spikes often establish new, elevated baselines, increasing vulnerability to future events.
