He Calls It Socialism; Marx Called It Communism's Last Stage
Zohran Mamdani defined socialism on Theo Von's podcast as the government providing everything needed for a dignified life, including housing, childcare, and transit. This definition aligns with Karl Marx's description of the higher stage of communism, where distribution is based on need rather than work. Mamdani's interpretation omits Marx's idea of the state withering away, instead positioning the government as a perpetual delivery service. He believes this model is applicable nationwide, citing the inability of many to afford basic necessities across various cities. Mamdani also suggested that democratic socialists can win elections anywhere, echoing a growing sentiment within the Democratic party. An example of this socialist agenda is the free Pre-K program in New York City, available to all parents regardless of their status. This initiative emerged as the city faced budget constraints and potential tax increases. City Hall has established a network of creators to promote such initiatives, funded by substantial public spending. Mamdani views patriotism as a form of dissent against perceived inequalities. Critics have pointed out Mamdani's radical agenda, with Bill Maher directly identifying him and his supporters as communists. Despite these labels, Mamdani continues to use the term democratic socialist while advocating for policies mirroring the higher phase of communism, with an active, not withering, state.
