Federal health officials are encouraging state Medicaid programs to stop covering dental fillings that contain mercury. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services sent letters urging states to phase out coverage for dental amalgam. Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz stated this is a step towards safe, higher quality care. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. emphasized that mercury has no place in healthcare, especially with safe alternatives available. The Indian Health Service also announced plans to end the use of mercury fillings by 2027 due to health concerns. Research suggests amalgam may lead to higher mercury levels in the blood and some patients report health issues attributed to them. The Minamata Convention on Mercury advises countries to restrict amalgam use, and some nations have already done so. While some groups like the American Dental Association maintain amalgam fillings are safe, the FDA notes limited data on long-term effects in young children. Alternatives like composite resin, porcelain, and glass ionomer are readily available. Composite fillings are considered durable, aesthetically pleasing, and moderately priced.
