Heat Dome Threatens America's 250th Birthday As Power Grid Crisis Continues
A severe heat dome is currently impacting the eastern United States, particularly the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions. This extreme heat is disrupting holiday festivities like the 4th of July parade in Washington D.C. and straining the nation's power grid. The PJM power grid, serving 67 million people, is facing a potential crisis for the third consecutive day due to surging cooling demand. Emergency orders mandating full capacity operation of fossil-fuel power plants have so far prevented grid collapse. The reliability of natural gas, nuclear, and coal power sources has been crucial, while solar and wind energy have contributed minimally. Temperatures are projected to reach triple digits before a brief respite from cooler weather next week. However, another heat dome may develop later in the month. Forecasters anticipate a shift from intense heat to stormy weather in the Mid-Atlantic immediately following the heatwave.
