House Approves Establishing New Committee To Investigate Jan. 6 Capitol Breach

The U.S. House of Representatives voted to establish a new committee to investigate the January 6, 2021, Capitol breach. This new panel, chaired by Rep. Barry Loudermilk, falls under the House Judiciary Committee's jurisdiction. This action fulfills a promise by House Speaker Mike Johnson to create a Republican-led subcommittee after the previous Democrat-led committee faced accusations of bias. The resolution to form the panel was introduced by Loudermilk, who himself was investigated by the prior committee. Speaker Johnson stated this new panel would continue efforts to uncover the full truth surrounding January 6. The previous January 6 Select Committee, formed in 2021, was criticized for its partisan nature. Then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi controversially appointed Republicans critical of Donald Trump to the previous panel. The prior committee concluded Trump was responsible for the events of January 6. Trump, however, denies responsibility and points to offers of National Guard support that were allegedly blocked.
