Representative Suhas Subramanyam announced he was informed by the Department of Justice that his phone calls were wiretapped. This surveillance occurred in the spring while he was communicating with a Virginia state legislator. Subramanyam, a Democrat, views this as a troubling pattern of the DOJ targeting political opponents of President Trump. He stated this incident is deeply concerning, citing previous investigations into state Attorneys General and the former FBI director. The DOJ has not yet commented on the matter. Subramanyam released a notice from the DOJ and FBI indicating a federal judge authorized the wiretap in early March. This interception of his calls took place between March 6 and April 5. The wiretap was reportedly linked to a DOJ corruption probe into Virginia state Senator Louise Lucas, who denies any wrongdoing. Subramanyam finds the timing suspicious, occurring during a key redistricting referendum campaign and while his committee was requesting testimony on the Epstein investigation. He also expressed concern about how the information obtained from the wiretap was being used and whether it was related to his role on the Oversight Committee.
