House passes ACA subsidies extension in dramatic vote

Seventeen House Republicans joined Democrats in voting to extend enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies for three years. This vote was a rare rebuke of Republican leadership, stemming from concerns over rising healthcare costs. While the subsidy extension faces an uphill battle in the Senate, the House vote increases pressure for a bipartisan agreement. The House approved a straightforward three-year extension without modifications. This measure was brought to a vote via a discharge petition signed by four Republicans, bypassing House Speaker Mike Johnson. Republican leadership opposes the subsidies, viewing them as wasteful spending. A bipartisan group in the Senate is discussing a compromise, possibly with new subsidy limitations. President Trump has largely remained uninvolved in these congressional discussions, leaving Republicans to negotiate internally. However, Trump has advised House Republicans to be flexible on the Hyde Amendment, though many still want it attached to the ACA subsidies. The Congressional Budget Office estimates the extension would increase the deficit by $80.6 billion over ten years. It is projected to provide health coverage to an additional four million people by 2028. Without an extension, ACA enrollees are expected to see their out-of-pocket premium costs more than double.
