House Republicans cave to Senate with vote to end 75-day DHS shutdown

House lawmakers have passed Homeland Security funding, aiming to end the current partial government shutdown. This action by voice vote prevents a prolonged shutdown that could have lasted until mid-May. A prior agreement between House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune outlined a two-track funding approach. Initially, funding was to be allocated for most of DHS through regular appropriations. Crucially, ICE and Border Patrol were to receive separate funding via a budget reconciliation bill. However, House members revolted against this plan. They viewed passing DHS funding without provisions for ICE and Border Patrol as a move to defund law enforcement. This uprising led to the current vote to fund the entirety of Homeland Security. The House has also initiated the process for additional immigration enforcement funding. This resolution aims to address the concerns and bring departments back online.
