Houthis Detain 11 UN Staff, Calling Them 'Spies' For US & Israel

Israel conducted major airstrikes on Sanaa last Saturday, resulting in the deaths of Houthi Prime Minister Ahmed al-Rahawi and other top officials, marking a significant loss for the Houthi leadership. The following day, Houthi militants stormed offices of the World Food Programme and UNICEF in the capital. Several UN staff members were detained during these raids. A Houthi statement accused the detained UN aid workers of being spies for the United States and Israel, threatening them with trial if their alleged spying is confirmed. Yemeni security sources have also apprehended numerous individuals on suspicion of collaborating with Israel. This situation adds to existing detentions of UN personnel, with the UN envoy to Yemen condemning the arbitrary detentions and demanding immediate release. The Houthis were already holding 23 UN personnel, some since 2021, and had detained eight more in January. The World Food Programme is actively seeking more information about the newly detained staff. Israeli officials indicated they had real-time intelligence on Houthi leaders before Saturday's strike. It is plausible that Israeli intelligence services have assets in Yemen, and using NGOs as a means of intelligence gathering is a known tactic.
