Airtel aimed to provide flawless live streaming for the Indian Premier League cricket season to millions of fans. They partnered with Google Cloud for the IPL 2026 season's digital delivery. The streaming infrastructure handled hundreds of petabytes of data across 74 matches, with the final match processing billions of requests. Delivering video during massive concurrency spikes required an edge architecture focused on localization and proactive monitoring. Airtel utilized Google Cloud's Media CDN and its extensive global edge network for deep local edge proximity and excellent cache efficiency. This resulted in 99.9% of tournament traffic being served locally within India, minimizing network hops. The architecture achieved superior caching efficiency with over 98% cache hit ratio, keeping origin server demands minimal. Consistent ultra-low latency, specifically p99 below 300ms, ensured fast stream start times and reduced buffering. Beyond architecture, meticulous operational preparation and proactive match-day execution were vital. Integrated operational support included pre-tournament readiness reviews and continuous Monitoring as a Service (MaaS). Dedicated match-day and weekend support ensured real-time event assistance from joint engineering teams.
