How Europe is building its own DARPA to counter the drone threat

Germany’s SPRIND and Sweden’s Vinnova, public innovation agencies, have partnered to back European teams developing anti-drone systems for critical infrastructure. This collaboration addresses Europe's struggle to bring radical ideas to market quickly, as highlighted in Mario Draghi's report. Both agencies, modeled on DARPA but without its military focus, aim to foster disruptive innovation. SPRIND, established in 2019, has unique legal flexibility, including taking equity stakes in startups, a power Vinnova has long utilized. The partnership specifically targets anti-drone technology due to increasing security concerns from hostile drone activity and reliance on foreign hardware. A fragmented drone sector in Europe necessitates coordinated demand to support startups effectively. The agencies’ support provides crucial funding and market access for companies like EAGLE.ONE, which builds drone interceptors. This collaboration helps pool expertise and accelerate innovation, embodying the "iteration speed is a superpower" philosophy. The success of this model is inspiring similar initiatives, with the Netherlands launching a SPRIND-style agency and the European Innovation Council piloting challenge-driven funding. Ultimately, the partnership aims to solve grand challenges by supporting difficult-to-solve problems.
