How Tech Scammers Conned Four People Out of $673,000 in Three Days
Four Clallam County residents recently lost over $673,000 in just three days due to various scams. One victim lost $3,500 by purchasing Apple gift cards for a fake Microsoft technical support scammer. Another individual lost $50,000 after clicking a malicious email that granted scammers access to their financial accounts. A 64-year-old resident lost approximately $200,000 in cryptocurrency by downloading a fake "rescue" app after believing their Coinbase account was closed. This application allowed remote access to their phone, leading them to transfer funds to a scammer's fraudulent wallet. In another scam, an 84-year-old resident was tricked into believing they were under investigation for child pornography and money laundering. They were instructed to purchase gold to protect their assets, losing around $420,000 worth of gold. The victim handed this gold over to an unknown man at the end of their driveway. This realization of being defrauded only occurred after speaking with bank officials. The sheriff's office warns that criminals use fear, trust, and urgency to manipulate victims. They strongly advise pausing before sending money, purchasing gift cards, or transferring cryptocurrency. A simple phone call to a trusted family member, bank, or law enforcement can prevent significant financial loss.
