How The Soviets Replaced Christmas With A Socialist Winter Holiday

Leftist movements often attempt to reshape calendars to control populations and enforce new ways of life. The French Revolution's calendar overhaul, including a ten-day week and renamed months, illustrates this. Soviet communists also sought calendar reforms, aiming to dismantle traditional religious observances like the Sabbath. They successfully suppressed many Christian holidays in Russia, particularly Easter. Christmas faced more resistance, leading to a shift towards a secular holiday. Initially banned, Christmas was later rebranded as a secular New Year celebration by Stalin. The "Winter Tree" replaced the Christmas tree, with a Santa Claus figure renamed "Father Frost." The Soviet regime emphasized the holiday with rituals like champagne and the national anthem, separating it from Christian roots. The communist goal was to eliminate religious influence and mold a "Communist man," as revealed in a Congressional report. Stalin saw value in the gift-giving aspect, incorporating Father Frost who attributed good things to Stalin. Soviet children's gatherings featured Father Frost lecturing on communist ideals, with Stalin as the source of blessings.
