How the US Nuclear Plant Fleet Is Leaning Into AI

Nearly all ninety-four U.S. nuclear reactors are adopting AI technologies. California's Atomic Canyon launched NIVA, the Nuclear Industry Virtual Assistant, after successful pilot testing. The AI startup Nuclearn has partnered with over sixty-five U.S. entities, including NuScale Power Corp. for advanced reactors. Microsoft and Nvidia are collaborating on AI to optimize nuclear plant lifecycles, from permitting to operations. This rapid adoption is driven by tech companies seeking nuclear power for data centers and AI's ability to manage complex nuclear operations. AI is seen as crucial for addressing challenges like intricate regulations and aging infrastructure and workforces. Nuclear plants generate substantial paperwork for regulatory compliance and problem resolution. Nuclearn's AI helps efficiently search data for faster filing and problem-solving, likened to a "ChatGPT for nuclear." This AI integration is vital for supporting a shrinking, skilled workforce and meeting surging electricity demand. Currently, these AI systems report to humans and do not directly control power plant operations.
