How this Buffalo-based bank is using tech as a competitive edge

Michael Wisler joined M&T Bank as CIO in 2018, transitioning from Capital One to enhance the bank's internal technology capabilities. This strategic shift aimed to reduce external contractor reliance, improve responsiveness to change, and build more resilient systems. Wisler's transformation treated technology and its experts as a significant competitive advantage for M&T. To achieve this, the bank invested in recruiting skilled employees through programs targeting new graduates and nontraditional candidates. Currently, over 80% of M&T's tech and data teams are in-house employees. Wisler's expanded role as senior executive vice president for technology and operations now encompasses supporting employees and core customer functions across a large network. He has focused on streamlining operations and equipping teams to leverage technology for efficiency at scale. M&T is actively exploring AI applications for tasks like enhancing efficiency, improving cybersecurity, and anticipating customer needs. The bank has already deployed AI copilots to thousands of employees and used AI for coding and risk detection. M&T is considering both in-house AI development and external vendor solutions to meet its technology needs. Wisler also contributes to the Buffalo tech ecosystem by serving on the boards of TechBuffalo and 43North, demonstrating a commitment to community development alongside institutional goals.
