How U.S. tech built China’s surveillance state in Nepal

Boudhanath Stupa in Nepal, a symbol of sanctuary for Tibetans, now faces Chinese surveillance. China is exporting surveillance technology to numerous countries, including Nepal, as part of a push for global influence. This technology, often based on American designs, enables intrusive policing and control, stifling dissent. Chinese firms like Hikvision and Dahua, utilized by Nepal, benefit from Amazon Web Services, despite human rights concerns. The increasing surveillance has drastically reduced the number of Tibetan refugees seeking asylum. A 2021 report revealed Chinese surveillance systems within Nepal's border zone. Tibetans face relentless surveillance, with cameras tracking movements and identifying potential protesters. China provides extensive aid and training, including surveillance technology, to the Nepali police. The Chinese government denies any wrongdoing, calling such claims fabrications. Due to these conditions, the Tibetan population in Nepal has plummeted. The Free Tibet movement faces significant challenges due to the constant monitoring and lack of freedom.
