How Uber improves network reliability while unblocking cloud migration
Uber, like cities, experiences constant growth and the challenge of managing traffic flow. To maintain its expanding platform and user trust, Uber has evolved its technical strategies. A key solution has been application awareness on Cloud Interconnect, an industry-first tool for hybrid network traffic prioritization. Uber partnered with Google Cloud to develop this capability, ensuring it met their global operational demands. This tool helps prioritize critical traffic, ensuring business continuity during potential network congestion. Traditional overprovisioning of bandwidth is costly and unreliable, especially with the rise of AI and massive data transfers. Application awareness offers four major features: traffic handling, congestion response, latency management, and cost efficiency. Uber deployed this across its infrastructure, classifying and prioritizing end-user traffic over less sensitive data. This approach treats traffic intelligently, protecting business-critical applications during high-demand periods. By enabling efficient bandwidth utilization, Uber has reduced its total cost of ownership and migrated significant workloads to Google Cloud. Application awareness on Cloud Interconnect is crucial for maintaining service reliability and embracing modern hybrid cloud strategies.
