The world's first free-combat tournament for full-sized machines, called the Ultimate Robot Knock-out Legend (URKL), recently took place in Shenzhen, China. During one match, a robot named White Eagle kicked off the head of its opponent, Matador. Despite losing its head, Matador continued to fight, throwing punches and kicks. The headless robot eventually fell, crushing its severed head. As it attempted to rise, the head detached completely, leading to the machine's final collapse. The URKL competition featured 32 international teams utilizing standardized T800 humanoid robots designed by Shenzhen robotics company EngineAI. This event represents an escalation in the growing genre of robot combat, following earlier, smaller-scale humanoid robot fights. Previous robot combat events have been criticized as mere "robot theater." The URKL aims to differentiate itself by using full-sized humanoids and emphasizing software and tuning for competitive advantage. The organization had previously showcased their T800 robots performing impressive combat maneuvers.
