I Built a Paper Trading and Algo Trading App as a Solo Developer. Here's What I Learned.
Algomaya is a solo-developed app designed as a paper trading and algorithmic trading simulator for beginners. Over eight months, the creator built the entire application, including the frontend, backend, database, and deployment. The app currently boasts over 1,500 users and features more than 50 trading algorithms with an integrated AI assistant. The tech stack includes React Native with Expo for the frontend, FastAPI on Google Cloud Run for the backend, and PostgreSQL on Oracle Cloud for the database. Google Gemini powers the AI trading mentor, named Maya. The core functionality of Algomaya allows users to paper trade over 150 US stocks and cryptocurrencies with virtual money. Users can also visually build trading strategies using common indicators, backtest them on historical data, and deploy automated trading bots. The app aims to make algorithmic trading accessible by offering a platform that is less expensive and complex than professional tools.Significant technical challenges included sourcing reliable real-time market data on a budget, requiring the development of a robust caching layer due to API unreliability. Optimizing the backtesting engine to handle extensive historical data efficiently was another hurdle. Implementing subscription management through Google Play billing proved complex due to documentation gaps and frequent changes. Integrating the AI assistant involved careful prompt engineering to ensure educational responses rather than direct financial advice.Key learnings for solo development emphasized the power of content creation, with over 170 blog posts driving organic traffic and establishing authority. App Store Optimization (ASO) was crucial, with minor keyword changes significantly impacting visibility. Providing a generous free tier was vital for user retention, acting as a primary marketing tool. Despite minimal revenue, the app incurs low monthly costs of around $10. Future plans include launching on iOS, introducing push notifications, enhancing AI features, and building community aspects. The developer advises other solo creators to ship quickly, engage with users, and prioritize features that are actually used.
