I Built a Paper Trading and Algo Trading App as a Solo Developer. Here's What I Learned.

A solo developer created Algomaya, an app for beginners interested in paper trading and algorithmic trading simulation. The app features a frontend built with React Native and Expo Router, a FastAPI backend on Google Cloud Run, and a PostgreSQL database. Algomaya allows users to paper trade stocks and crypto, visually build trading strategies, backtest them on historical data, and deploy automated bots. The core idea was to provide an accessible and affordable platform for learning algorithmic trading, which is often expensive or complex. Key technical challenges included sourcing reliable real-time market data, optimizing the backtesting engine's performance, and navigating Google Play's subscription billing system. Integrating Google Gemini as an AI trading mentor, named Maya, required careful prompt engineering to ensure educational responses over direct advice. The developer learned that creating extensive content, optimizing App Store listings (ASO), and offering a generous free tier are crucial for app growth. Despite minimal revenue currently, the app has accumulated over 1,500 registered users and maintains a 4.0-star rating on the Play Store. Ongoing development plans include launching on iOS, introducing push notifications, enhancing AI suggestions, and building community features. The developer is seeking feedback on the technical architecture and encourages interested users to try Algomaya on the Google Play Store.
