Isaac "Ike" Towell, born in 1849 and passing away in 1934 at 83, was a lifelong infidel and outspoken atheist. Known for his unwavering principles, honesty, and courage, he also strongly opposed alcohol and tobacco. As city marshal in Columbus, Texas in 1885, he maintained a respected life among his many friends. Approximately one year before his death, Ike meticulously planned his own funeral, arranging for his headstone and purchasing his coffin. He also left a final message to be read at the service by someone unafraid of divine retribution. Over one hundred people attended his funeral to hear Ike's message about living a respectable life without clergy. He emphasized that his religion comprised doing right and loving justice, advocating for truthfulness and debt payment. Ike explicitly stated his disbelief in any deity, devil, ghost, or savior. He spent his life opposing various vices and challenged the accuracy of clergy's posthumous descriptions of non-believers. His headstone inscription clearly states his identity as an infidel free from superstition, finding his religion in justice and doing right, with no hope of heaven or fear of hell.
