In Copilot In Excel Demo, AI Told Teacher a 27% Exam Score Is of No Concern
A Microsoft demo showcased AI's potential to revolutionize education and job sectors through tools like Copilot in Excel. The demo aimed to show how teachers could use natural language prompts for data analysis, even without prior Excel proficiency. However, Copilot incorrectly identified no outliers in student exam scores, despite a significant range. The outlier was even named after the incompetent boss from "The Office." The demo's additional data analysis included an inappropriate chart choice and a poorly formatted bar chart. This raises questions about whether teachers will need to spend considerable time correcting AI-generated outputs. The flawed demo highlights the gap between the promise and reality of AI assistants. It also underscores the importance of thoroughly reviewing AI promotional content. The example reveals that AI vendors and customers sometimes overlook the need to closely examine AI outputs.
