Inflation Is 'Broadening Out' As Producer Prices Soar Most In 4 Years
Producer prices surged unexpectedly and significantly in September, exceeding analyst expectations. This marked the largest monthly jump in over a year, pushing the year-over-year figure to its highest level since December 2022. Energy prices were the primary driver of this inflationary pressure. Final demand goods prices saw a substantial increase, with energy accounting for over 80 percent of this rise. Gasoline prices alone contributed half of the increase in final demand goods. However, the inflation was not solely confined to energy. Final demand services also experienced their largest increase since April, with trade services margins playing a significant role. Core producer prices also rose sharply, more than double what was anticipated, indicating underlying inflationary pressures beyond energy. These rising intermediate demand prices suggest future producer price increases. The widening gap between consumer and producer prices signals potential pressure on corporate profit margins. This data offers no support for a less hawkish Federal Reserve, and interest rate hike expectations are reportedly increasing.
