Inside Trump's "funny numbers" on mass deportations

The Trump administration claims 2 million undocumented immigrants have been removed or self-deported since Inauguration Day. A large portion of this figure, 1.6 million, is based on "self-deportation" estimates derived from government survey data. Experts express skepticism about the reliability of using this survey data to measure deportations due to its small sample size and potential for inaccurate responses. The Census Bureau emphasizes the survey wasn't designed to determine the size of the foreign-born population. DHS has ceased publishing its usual deportation statistics, making independent verification difficult. Traditional deportation metrics involve ICE removals and CBP returns at the border. Deportations have increased under Trump via ICE removals, but attempted border crossings have decreased, lowering CBP returns. The administration's "self-deportation" app offers financial incentives for voluntary departure. Concerns are raised about the limited use of the self-deportation app despite large "self-deportation" claims. The administration will soon submit immigration data through September of 2025 to Congress.
