Introducing Agent Compute Engine and expanded agent governance
Scaling autonomous agents like Gemini requires robust infrastructure for execution and control. Google is launching Agent Compute Engine, a specialized compute service designed for the dynamic needs of AI agents, offering isolated runtime security and efficiency. This service powers Gemini for work tasks and will soon be available to customers in preview. An accompanying open-source option, Agent Substrate on GKE, provides customization and multi-cloud portability for those standardizing on Kubernetes. Both solutions offer enhanced security through hardware isolation and rapid start-up/pause capabilities. Agent Compute Engine utilizes microVMs with copy-on-write memory sharing and fast checkpointing for efficiency, while Agent Substrate leverages a zero-trust architecture for high-density agent deployment. To address the challenges of scaling agent fleets, Google is extending Gemini for business's agent governance capabilities. Agent Gateway acts as a central policy enforcer, Agent Registry manages approved agents, and Agent Identity provides secure identification. These governance features will now cover a broader range of Google Cloud runtimes, cross-cloud environments, and even local endpoints. New governance enhancements include granular cost controls, intelligent model routing, and expanded security partner integrations. The company aims to provide a resilient agent infrastructure that combines high-performance execution with comprehensive governance for AI agents.
