Google is introducing "skills" as reusable custom instructions for Gemini, available in the Gemini app and Google Workspace. These skills will replace "Gems" for task-specific tailoring. Skills can be stacked in a single prompt, unlike Gems, and utilize the open SKILL.md standard. The transition away from Gems is scheduled to occur over the coming months, with specific dates for business and education users. Skills are currently separate between the Gemini app and Workspace, requiring separate creation. Gems will move to the Gemini app's settings panel before full removal. Workspace Studio flows with "Ask a Gem" steps will stop working. Admins are encouraged to inform users about the transition and key dates. Educators are directed towards Gemini Notebook and Guided Learning. End users can find resources on creating and managing skills. Skills are rolling out to Workspace starting October 5, 2026, and the Gemini app on October 13, 2026. Gems will be fully retired by March 1, 2027, for business and enterprise users, and June 1, 2027, for education users.
