Amazon Web Services has acknowledged the permanent loss of some customer data following Iranian drone strikes on its data centers in Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates. The company stated that it was unable to restore access to resources and data in certain affected availability zones. Specifically, one availability zone in the UAE (mec1-az2) experienced irretrievable data loss. The damage in Bahrain was even more extensive, impacting all three availability zones. AWS noted that the infrastructure damage exceeded the resilience of its regional and multi-AZ services. The company had previously suspended customer billing in the affected regions. Efforts to restore normal operations have been ongoing for six months. AWS had advised customers to migrate resources and use remote backups immediately after the strikes. The company also reportedly provided $150 million in customer credits after the initial attacks. The catastrophic damage suggests the Iranian strikes were highly effective.
