Is Ukraine Training Drug Cartel Mercenaries From Latin America?
Reports suggest individuals, some with criminal ties, are seeking drone training in Ukraine to utilize that knowledge for illicit activities. Numerous foreigners, including Latin Americans, have joined the fight, some unprepared for the intensity of the war. Concerns have arisen about potential links between Ukrainian conflict and drug cartels in Latin America, with reports of cartels utilizing drone tactics learned in Ukraine. Intelligence agencies allegedly warned of cartel members gaining drone training in order to bring the skills back to foreign criminal organizations. Ukrainian recruitment efforts targeting foreigners have been documented, though the narrative of direct collaboration with cartels is questionable. Colombian President Gustavo Petro has addressed the situation, advocating for the return of Colombian volunteers from Ukraine, citing mistreatment. Numerous reports also show that Colombia is facing this issue in Sudan, as well. Ukrainian authorities and recruitment efforts, however, appear aimed at attracting volunteers to support their cause, not directly recruiting for criminal purposes. The risks for volunteers are significant, with some facing detention and imprisonment upon their return.
