Is vinho verde the perfect summer wine?
Portugal's "green wine", or vinho verde, is an excellent choice for summer gatherings and outdoor dining. The name "green wine" refers to its youthfulness and vibrancy, not its color. These wines are produced in the Vinho Verde DOC region of northern Portugal. They are characterized by their refreshing qualities, making them ideal for warm weather. The region's Atlantic maritime climate contributes to the wine's bright, acidic profile. Well-drained granite soils also play a role in shaping its taste. Vinho verde typically has a low alcohol by volume, usually under 12%. Many also possess a slight spritz, adding to their effervescence. Common flavor notes include ripe lime and orchard fruits. Overall, these wines are gluggable and highly refreshing.
