The Israeli government has removed protected status from Nile crocodiles, allowing them to be used for security purposes. This decision facilitates a proposal to construct a detention facility for Palestinians surrounded by these reptiles. Environment Minister Idit Silman reclassified Nile crocodiles as "specially managed wild animals" via a decree. This move, reportedly influenced by National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, contradicts advice from the Environment Ministry's legal adviser and environmental groups. Ben Gvir was inspired by Florida's "Alligator Alcatraz" immigration detention center. The Israel Nature and Parks Authority and environmental organizations oppose the plan, citing a lack of professional basis and significant risks. They argue crocodiles are sentient beings with specific needs and question the proposal's effectiveness, especially during winter. Critics also point to a sharp deterioration in conditions for Palestinians in Israeli prisons since October 2023. Nile crocodiles have been protected in Israel since 2013, with previous incidents of their killing by the military drawing condemnation. Environmental groups object to using animals for guarding and deterrence, advocating for conventional security measures.
