John Deere To Pay $99 Million In Monumental Right-To-Repair Settlement

Farmers have long battled John Deere seeking the right to repair their equipment. A significant settlement has been reached, addressing these concerns after years of disputes. John Deere will pay $99 million into a fund for farmers involved in a class action lawsuit. This settlement focuses on those who paid for large equipment repairs from authorized dealers since January 2018. Plaintiffs are expected to recover a larger percentage of overcharge damages than typical. The agreement also mandates John Deere to provide digital tools for equipment maintenance and repairs for a decade. Farmers previously resorted to software hacking, highlighting the urgency of this access. A 2023 memorandum made some initial moves, this settlement strengthens these measures. While a judge's approval is still pending, it's expected to be granted. John Deere also faces another lawsuit from the FTC for similar practices.
