"La Croix des Fiancés" (The Fiancés Cross) in Jalhay, Belgium

The Hautes-Fagnes is Belgium's largest peat bog, situated in the eastern part of the country near the German border. It represents the highest elevation in Belgium, marked by the Signal de Botrange. Originally more extensive, this vast peat bog is now approximately 10 km long and 6 km wide. To aid navigation due to its open nature, visual landmarks like trees and monuments were erected. One prominent landmark is "La Croix des Fiancés," the Cross of the Betrothed. This cross is associated with the tragic story of François Reiff and Marie Solheid, who became engaged in 1870. Despite a severe snowstorm on January 22nd, 1871, they attempted to travel to Xhoffraix for marriage documents but never arrived. Marie's body was discovered near the Belgian-Prussian border in March, with a note from François indicating his intention to die. François's body was found shortly after, several kilometers away. A cross has marked the site of Marie's discovery since at least 1906, serving as a landmark for walkers. Although the surrounding landscape has changed from open country to woodland, the cross remains a place of remembrance for the tragic lovers.
