Landscape architecture’s top prize goes to Mario Schjetnan
Mexican landscape architect Mario Schjetnan has won the prestigious 2025 Cornelia Hahn Oberlander International Landscape Architecture Prize. His firm, Grupo de Diseño Urbano (GDU), is recognized for transforming parks and improving social housing in Mexico. GDU's designs emphasize equitable access to nature and environmental knowledge. Schjetnan and GDU designed significant parks like Chapultepec Forest and Park, a large park in Mexico City. The Oberlander Prize includes a $100,000 award and public engagement activities. Schjetnan co-founded GDU after contributing to a vast affordable housing program. His work focuses on liveability, social justice, and urban equity across different sections of society. Other notable projects include Xochimilco Ecological Park and projects in the United States. The prize celebrates his integrated approach to landscape architecture and its positive impact.
