Lawmakers Probe Growing Use of Chinese AI Models In US Companies

U.S. lawmakers are investigating American companies' use of Chinese artificial intelligence models due to significant concerns. These concerns include potential censorship, security risks, and the possibility that U.S. firms are opting for cheaper foreign AI due to the cost or restrictions of domestic alternatives. The House Committee on Homeland Security and the House Select Committee on China are jointly conducting this probe. They have sent letters to companies like Cursor and Airbnb regarding their exposure to risks from Chinese-developed AI. Chairman Andrew Garbarino highlighted China's rapid advancement in AI, particularly in cybersecurity capabilities, which is alarming for U.S. national security. While some government bodies ban Chinese AI models, their use by private U.S. companies is not prohibited, leading some tech leaders to advocate for their cost-effectiveness. Cursor, for instance, utilized a Chinese AI model for its Composer 2 model. The investigation also assesses whether the U.S. has an adequate strategy to counter the rise of these foreign AI models. Potential responses include federal procurement bans, though enforcing bans on open-source models is challenging. Disseminating information about the risks of Chinese AI models to U.S. companies is another proposed approach. Ultimately, both branches of government are expected to express their disapproval of U.S. companies adopting these AI models.
