Lebanese Army Says Plan To Limit Weapons To State Forces At Advanced Stage

The Lebanese army announced its plan to restrict weapons to official security agencies has reached an advanced stage, expanding its presence in southern Lebanon. This follows a government decision authorizing the army to implement the arms restriction plan by the end of 2025. The army's actions aim to secure vital areas and extend its control in the South Litani sector, excluding Israeli-occupied areas. This initiative aligns with a U.S.-brokered cease-fire agreement from 2024, requiring Lebanon to expand army control and limit Hezbollah's operations. Despite the cease-fire, Israel continues airstrikes, claiming they target Hezbollah's rearmament efforts. Israel's Prime Minister stated that Hezbollah's full disarmament is crucial for Israel's security and Lebanon's future, but considered current efforts insufficient. Lebanese President endorsed the army's statement, emphasizing the aim of consolidating state control over weapons. The Lebanese army is coordinating with UNIFIL and the U.S.-backed cease-fire monitoring mechanism. The army condemned Israeli attacks, which hinder their efforts to establish control; Israel carried out strikes, claiming they targeted Hezbollah and Hamas facilities.
