The author enjoys reading email newsletters for their informative and thought-provoking content, but lacks time during the week and prefers not to use a computer on Saturdays. To address this, a system was developed where newsletters are automatically moved to a "toprint" folder, with favorite ones starred. On Friday afternoons, starred newsletters and selected unstarred ones are printed, often double-sided and four pages per sheet, for Saturday morning reading. This manual process, however, generated significant paper waste and involved tedious stripping of unwanted content and images. Frustrated by the inefficiency, the author created "newsprint," a Python package to automate this task. Newsprint processes starred newsletters, creating a PDF with promotional content and unnecessary images removed. It intelligently handles images and adds footers with newsletter and page information. The package can also generate a table of contents and, using a Claude API key, provide overall newsletter summaries and personalized insights. Users can select unstarred newsletters to include, customize paper size and orientation, and manage processed newsletters. Newsprint has already reduced the author's paper usage and enhanced their reading experience.
