Lewis and Clark Statues in Clarksville, Indiana

The Lewis & Clark expedition's story began in Clarksville, Indiana, on October 14, 1803, with the meeting of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. President Thomas Jefferson commissioned the Corps of Discovery after the Louisiana Purchase to explore the American West. Their purpose was to map the region, establish trade with Native tribes, and gather scientific data. Lewis, the expedition leader, chose Clark as his co-leader, assembling the initial core of the Corps. After Lewis's arrival with the keelboat, the Corps departed down the Ohio River towards St. Louis, Missouri. They wintered at Camp River Dubois before beginning their westward journey on May 14, 1804. The expedition, including more than 45 men and Lewis's dog, reached the Pacific Ocean in November 1805. They returned to St. Louis in September 1806 and finally arrived back at the Falls of the Ohio in November 1806. The expedition was a success, contributing to scientific knowledge and U.S. territorial claims, though also contributing to the displacement of Native peoples. Visitors can explore the historic site and nearby attractions like the Falls of Ohio State Park.
