Linus Torvalds successfully used AI to help him debug a persistent Intel Xe graphics driver bug. This bug required 24 debugging patches and 18 kernel reboots to finally isolate. Despite the AI occasionally declaring the problem "impossible and unsolvable," Torvalds persisted. He attributes the AI's pessimism to its training data, suggesting it wasn't exposed to his level of stubbornness. The specific issue involved a mismatch in usable memory on a Battlemage G21 graphics card. This mismatch caused the GDM display manager to continuously restart. Torvalds' patch prevents the Xe kernel driver from handing out flat Compute Command Streamer storage as usable vRAM. He considers AI an "enormously helpful" tool in such complex debugging scenarios. This fix is now merged into Linux 7.3 Git. It is also slated for back-porting to stable kernel branches.
