Linus Torvalds On Why AI Works For Him

Many open-source developers, like System76, actively ban AI-generated content due to various concerns. However, Linux creator Linus Torvalds expresses a positive view on AI, stating he now enjoys using it as a tool. He cautions users to be very careful when using AI for critical tasks. Torvalds primarily acts as a maintainer for the Linux kernel, but still engages in programming for personal projects. He believes AI makes programming more enjoyable, especially in an era where the bar for software engineering is incredibly high. Torvalds sees AI as a "gateway drug" that helps new programmers find joy and relevance in their work. He personally uses AI to handle tasks he's less skilled at, like user interface design for his guitar pedal project. While he found initial AI results "horrendous," he iteratively refined the prompts with his existing C code. Torvalds acknowledges AI's utility in identifying security vulnerabilities for the Linux kernel. However, he also notes a downside: AI contributes to an influx of low-quality bug reports and superficial patches. Despite AI's growing influence, Torvalds attributes Linux's success to consistent, incremental development rather than massive overhauls. He champions a philosophy of steady, small improvements that collectively lead to significant features and ongoing progress.
