Man pleads guilty to arson attack on Josh Shapiro's home
Cody Balmer pleaded guilty to multiple charges including attempted murder for setting fire to Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro's residence. The incident happened while Shapiro and his family were asleep, prompting widespread condemnation. Balmer, motivated by Shapiro's support for Israel, used Molotov cocktails and stated he would have attacked the Governor. Shapiro and his family escaped unharmed, but the dining room was significantly damaged. Balmer also expressed his intent to harm Shapiro with a hammer. Balmer was sentenced to 25 to 50 years in prison for his actions. The Governor submitted a victim impact statement and discussed the emotional toll of the incident. Balmer's mother had tried to obtain mental health care for him before the arson. Shapiro emphasized the need to condemn political violence and hold perpetrators accountable. He stated that acts of political violence should not become normalized within society.
