Manually reorder and custom sort pivot tables in Google Sheets
Google Sheets now allows users to manually reorder pivot table rows and columns through drag-and-drop functionality. This feature enables users to arrange data according to specific business hierarchies or presentation needs. Users can drag individual items or multiple selected items to new positions within the pivot table. Nested child items will automatically move with their parent fields, preserving hierarchical structure. These custom sort states are persistent across browser sessions, data refreshes, and filters. This enhancement significantly improves the handling of custom sort orders from Microsoft Excel. Previously, imported Excel pivot tables with custom sorts reverted to default ordering in Google Sheets. Now, these custom sort orders are maintained upon import. Exporting back to Microsoft Excel also preserves these custom sort orders for seamless roundtrip compatibility. This feature is available to all Google Workspace and personal Google account users.
