Mark Dufour: CPython 3.15 (JIT) Performance Showdown
A performance comparison was conducted between CPython 3.15 and other Python implementations using eight example programs. The goal was to assess CPython's progress and compare it to alternatives like PyPy and Ahead-of-Time (AOT) transpilers. The benchmark results showed significant improvements in CPython 3.15 with its JIT compiler. Without the JIT, CPython 3.15 offered a modest speedup, but with the JIT enabled, performance increased substantially. This JIT improvement in 3.15 is considered a key takeaway, suggesting potential future convergence with PyPy's performance. PyPy 7.3.20 demonstrated a very impressive speedup, even with its broad Python feature support. AOT transpilers like TurboPython and Shed Skin, which operate on restricted Python subsets, achieved even greater speedups. TurboPython showed particularly strong performance, being the fastest for some programs, though it has some areas for improvement. Shed Skin also saw performance enhancements in its latest versions. The author acknowledges a slight bias towards Shed Skin in the results due to their involvement. Full detailed results for each program are available separately.
