Mastercard Introduces Fraud Screening Before Stablecoin Payments Go On-Chain
Mastercard has introduced Stablecoin Security, a new risk-scoring tool for financial institutions. This tool assists in examining payments before and during their movement on blockchains. Stablecoin transfers are known for their speed, but pre-emptive investigation of suspicious payments is challenging across different systems. Stablecoin Security aims to address this by integrating traditional payment intelligence with blockchain data. This allows banks and payment companies to assess risks like fraud, sanctions, and scams throughout a payment's journey. The service operates via an API, providing risk assessments before transactions are finalized. It considers payment context, fund origins, and potential exposure to restricted parties. Initial partners include Borderless.xyz and Keyrails. The tool fills an operational gap for businesses using stablecoin settlements, addressing concerns beyond technical feasibility. Mastercard's research indicates that many stablecoin transfers are complex, involving multiple steps. The product is launching initially in North America, with broader availability expected in 2027. While not eliminating fraud entirely, it introduces a familiar banking control to the blockchain payment environment.
