Meta Ordered To Pay New Mexico $25 Billion Over Misleading Privacy Claims

A Santa Fe judge has ordered Meta Platforms to pay New Mexico $25 billion. This decision follows a jury's finding of 43.9 million violations of state consumer-protection law. New Mexico alleged Meta made misleading statements about Facebook users' data privacy and control. The case originated from the Cambridge Analytica scandal. A jury determined that 26 out of 29 public statements by Facebook were misleading. The state's Unfair Practices Act allows a maximum penalty of $5,000 per willful violation. Judge Francis J. Mathew imposed the statutory maximum, then reduced the award to $25 billion. Interest at 15 percent annually will accrue until payment. Meta has announced its intention to appeal the ruling. The company's chief legal officer believes Meta will win on appeal, arguing the ruling hinders business in New Mexico. This is Meta's second significant courtroom defeat in New Mexico this year.
