Meta To Build $9 Billion Alberta Data Center, Its First In Canada

Meta is constructing its first Canadian data center in Alberta, marking a significant $9 billion investment. This facility will be a 1-gigawatt site designed to expand to 1.8 gigawatts, catering to Meta's growing AI infrastructure demands. The project includes Meta funding new generation and grid infrastructure, including a long-term agreement for a new natural gas power facility. Meta also pledges to offset its electricity usage through investments in clean and renewable energy. This announcement highlights Meta's substantial commitment to AI development and its expanding global data center footprint. Alberta's rich natural gas resources and cold climate offer cost-efficiency for such large-scale data centers. The provincial government is encouraging such investments by allowing proponents to build their own power sources. Meta's chosen data center will consume electricity equivalent to approximately 800,000 homes. The company is partnering with Pembina Pipeline for a new natural gas-fired power generation facility and Capital Power for interim electricity supply. This initiative is expected to stimulate demand for Western Canadian natural gas producers.
