Mexico Truckers Block Key Freight Routes In Nationwide Strike

Mexican truckers and farmers initiated a nationwide strike, blocking major highways and freight corridors across the country on Monday. The National Association of Transporters and the National Front for the Rescue of the Mexican Countryside organized the protest, impacting at least 20 states. The strike stemmed from concerns regarding cargo crime, high operating costs, and poor infrastructure, along with a lack of government action on agreed-upon solutions. Numerous critical freight routes, including access to Mexico City and border crossings, experienced disruptions. This mirrors similar protests in November 2025 that also disrupted trade. Increased insecurity and rising costs are key drivers behind the protests, particularly cargo theft. Protesters are requesting increased security, reduced extortion, and lower operating expenses. Farmers are also participating, highlighting the impact of fuel costs and agricultural pricing. The Mexican government responded, claiming it has provided support and sees no justification for the protests. Organizers indicate the strike could continue until agreements are reached, potentially impacting supply chains and freight. The government stated that the blockades were affecting third parties and the economy. This illustrates the complex interplay of economic challenges and political grievances faced by Mexican transport and agricultural sectors.
