Military Pursues AI Systems To Suppress Online Dissent Abroad
Internal Pentagon documents reveal the U.S. military's desire to leverage artificial intelligence for large-scale influence campaigns. The Special Operations Command (SOCOM) seeks AI systems capable of creating and disseminating propaganda at internet speed. These advanced AI tools would also be designed to systematically suppress opposition voices abroad. The military branch is looking for contractors to develop automated systems with minimal human oversight. The speed of the modern information environment is cited as a reason for this ambition. SOCOM aims to control narratives and influence foreign audiences in real time. Proposed AI systems would scrape data, analyze situations, and generate messages aligned with military objectives. Crucially, the technology would also aim to suppress dissenting arguments and access information on those countering U.S. messages. While the Pentagon claims these capabilities will adhere to responsible AI frameworks with human oversight, critics express concerns about the ethical implications and effectiveness of automated propaganda.
