Minimum wage will rise in 19 states starting Jan. 1

Many states are increasing their minimum wage, impacting millions of workers on New Year's Day. These raises often trigger wage adjustments for those above minimum wage as well. Over 8.3 million workers will see their pay increase, providing a boost amidst rising living costs. For the first time, more workers will be earning $15 or more per hour compared to the federal minimum. The shift towards higher minimum wages has gained traction after a decade of advocacy. Several states, including Missouri and Nebraska, will reach or surpass the $15 mark. Some states, like Washington, and New York, will have minimum wages of $17 or higher for certain workers. Nineteen states will see minimum wage increases on January 1st, reflecting a broader trend across the nation. While many have raised wages significantly, some states remain at the stagnant federal rate. Concerns regarding potential economic impacts of higher wages persist among some businesses and policymakers. Despite these increases, the real value of these wages has been diminished by inflation. Overall, the raises offer positive developments to people in the lowest wage bracket across the United States.
